Well Said Wednesday: It's Okay To Play With Your Words

October 14, 2020 in Fear & Loathing in Mktg

What if — just for today — you didn’t take your content so seriously?

What if you let yourself explore, play, mess around with the words you use for your business?

What if you could remind yourself that

It’s Not “Business Writing”… It’s Writing For Your Business

And your business is that thing you love to do and are driven to do and are called to do!

Let me share a little story about my morning:

Today started a little rough. It was “must finalize blog post” day (because it’s Wednesday and Well Said Wednesday posts on…you guessed it…Wednesdays.)

The energy was serious. My brow was furrowed. I was slipping into humorless “business writing” mode.

Ugh.

Could I do anything else, please?

So when my phone pinged with a new text, it was just the distraction I was looking for.

One of my accountability partners was sharing her goal for the day: make a dent in cleaning up her messy office. The text included a video of her walking through her space, pointing the camera at all the piles of crap and clutter she needed to tackle.

Two things happened:

  1. I noticed how many times she used the words “crap” and “clutter.” (In a nutshell: a lot)

  2. I wanted to cheer her on, as a good accountability partner does.

So I stepped away from my very serious blog work and wrote her a haiku. (A form I love, as I’ve mentioned once or twice.)

Three things happened:

  1. I (and she) enjoyed the moment of wordplay and fun.

  2. I brought a whole new energy to the blog I was finalizing.

  3. I decided to reschedule that one and write this instead, in the moment, in the spirit, in the sense of play.

If you’re feeling a little furrowed, depleted and “business writing-y” about your next piece of content, I invite to you play with your words.

Permission granted to crank out a sh*tty first draft, mess around with saying whatever’s on your mind, write a poem instead of a blog post.

You don’t have to publish it. The only goal is to shake you up and shake you out of your “business writing” mind. Because:

Your people don’t want to hear from your business. They want to hear from you.

Will you give it a try and tell me how it went on the 4.23 Communication Facebook page?

“Well Said Wednesday” is a blog by Barbara Govednik, Founder, Content Coach & Message Strategist of 4.23 Communication. It’s published every other Wednesday…ish.
