Well Said Wednesday: Curves Happen, And They Can Teach You Something

April 12, 2023 in Inspiration & Creativity, Fear & Loathing in Mktg

Yes, it has been a minute.

Life has thrown some curves at me recently, and even foreseeable curves are still a little jolting. I gave myself and my business a little space to be jolted. To go with it and bend in ways I wasn’t planning to bend.

There can be a gift in that. It can shake things up, dismantle cobwebs, make alternate paths visible.

And this is the perfect time of year for that kind of refresh. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we are smack dab in the middle of spring. Things are turning green and flowering. My farmer friend reminds me it’s lambing season, and there are dozens of new little hoofs prancing around her dirt.

So many signs of fresh starts and renewal.

For 4.23, too. I’ve been at this a long time (21 years in total this month!) and there’s power in a pause to consider what’s important and how do I help? So watch this space and 4.23’s other spaces (Facebook, LinkedIn) for refreshed ways to help you get out of your own rut about marketing, content, outreach, how you use your time (not to mention your money and your sanity.)

In the meantime, there are a couple of ways you can refresh your own thinking about how you define marketing and putting yourself and your work in the world.

Listen

I recently sat down with Wendy Pitts Reeves, host of the Ideal Practice Podcast to talk messaging and marketing. You can have a listen here.

Exorcise

And next week, I’m re-running my Marketing Mindset Reset webinar. It’s 90 minutes to exorcise all your marketing demons, including these greatest hits:

  • Unpacking your mushy marketing ideas

  • Getting real about the appeal of Magical Thinking Marketing - and why it rarely works

  • Looking at the true cost of holding back from being seen and heard

  • Uncovering the authentic heart of your outreach

If you’re needing a little spring refresh yourself, without the curves and baby lambs, consider joining us!

“Well Said Wednesday” is a blog by Barbara Govednik, Message Strategist, Editor and Founder of 4.23 Communication.
It’s published every other Wednesday…ish. Sometimes more “ish” than others.

The presumption is that there’s only one way to do it and that you must manipulate and tamp down your true voice – and your very message – to fit that form.

It’s not true.

Well Said Wednesday: ICYMI: Clean Up On Aisle Seven

What I had out there was a little junky, a little hodgepodge, a little chaotic. (Oh, the irony.) But also super common. So common, in fact, that I am willing to call myself out for it!

Message chaos happens three ways:

Well Said Wednesday: When the tank runs dry...

This month, I am doing some deep work within my business. I am sussing out the ways I can bring the most help, support, structure and sanity to my fellow small business owners. I am designing ways for them to embody their message, in the simplest, yet most compelling ways.

And I’m running through Sharpies and Post It’s like it’s my job! (Well, for now it kind of is my job.)

Your inner critic will tell you plainly that you’re about to embarrass yourself or that you can’t say that. It’s a shifty, narrow-minded, unhappy entity that entices you to backspace, delete and spend your writing time listening to the entire catalog of The Police. Well Said Wednesday, Again: Unsubscribes For The Win!

I could feel myself teetering on the edge of "why bother" last Monday. (Yep, even people who do this for a living and who know that content marketing is a long game of trust building and credential establishing have weak moments.)
